If you drive a 2018 Jaguar XE, XF, or F-Pace, you may never have to get out of your car to pay for gas again. Jaguar is introducing a feature that allows drivers to complete the entire transaction via the car’s touchscreen.
Jaguar has partnered with Shell to make this technology possible, so drivers can only use the cashless payment system at Shell gas stations. After installing the Shell app, drivers can simply pull up to any Shell pump and use the car’s touchscreen to select the amount of fuel they need. Then, drivers will pay via PayPal, Apple Pay, or starting later in the year, Android Pay. Finally, a receipt is sent to the touchscreen and to the driver’s email address.
Jaguar says the Shell app is especially handy for times when drivers forget their wallet or don’t want to wake up kids in the backseat to take them into the gas station. The obvious downside is, of course, you’ll still need to get out of your car to actually pump the gas.
The automaker is currently working with other companies to expand its in-car payment feature. “Whether it’s paying for fuel, parking, tolls, or even at a drive-through restaurant, the aim of cashless motoring is to make life easier for our customers,” Peter Virk, director of Connected Car and Future Technology for Jaguar Land Rover, said in a recent release.
The Shell app is currently available to download in the U.K. Additional markets including the U.S. will receive the feature sometime later this year.
Meanwhile, Jaguar is making a number of other big changes to its 2018 model lineup. The XE, XF, and F-Pace models receive engine updates as well as new convenience technologies and safety features. Jaguar’s 2018 models start arriving in the U.S. in May.
